Vintage Holton #2 Asymmetrical Rim Cornet Mouthpiece
RECONDITIONED / RE-PLATED
This is a fairly unusual (I won’t say rare) asymmetrical-rim mouthpiece marketed to “players whose lower jaw is shorter than the upper” as Holton said in their 1915 catalogue.
It cost more than double a conventional mouthpiece. ($3.25 instead of $1.25!)
A Holton #2 model, itself, was a fairly typical, middle-of-the-road cornet mouthpiece of the 1910s and 1920s.   A #2 was described as “Another popular model, regularly supplied with Holton Cornets. Cushion rim. Width of rim 3/16 inch. Inside opening at rim 5/8 inch. Depth of cup 5/8 inch.”
This is a reconditioned, re-plated mouthpiece that is almost as good as the day 100 years ago that it was delivered to its first owner. I say almost, because there were some irregularities on the outside of the piece that were buffed out prior to re-plating. These areas started out as little dents (maybe 4″ they are very small) which are still visible but are now smooth, but not perfectly regular. You have to really look for them though, most people would probably not notice.  The photos should speak to this.
Mouthpiece
specs (measured)
Cup Width: Published size of 5/8 ” is 0.625 in. (15.87mm) but I measure it closer
to 0.650 in. (16.5 mm) if you measure on the curve of the cushion.
Cup Depth: Approx. 0.6 in. – depends on what part of rim you measure from
Cup shape: curved “V”.
Rim shape: Cushion
Rim Width: 0.22 in. (5.59 mm)
Rim offset (high to low difference): about 1/16″
Bore: 0.153 in. (3.89 mm) (#23)
Overall length: 2.5 in.
For
reference, using the larger measurement this is about the size of a Bach 2 or a Wick 4.

About the Seller
I am not a professional musician, but have played the
trumpet/cornet since 4th Grade. So I know my way around a cornet and enjoy
studying their history and evolution, in addition to playing them. I hope part
of what I bring to the table is a knowledgeable and critical eye to evaluating
what I’m selling since you can’t look at it personally. Feel free to ask any
questions you may have about this sale or would like a closer look at anything
I can photograph.
