c. 1916-1926 York & Sons AL-TRU Model M Cornet Mouthpiece
RECONDITIONED / RE-PLATED
This line of mouthpieces was described by York in their 1917 catalog:
“These mouthpieces are made in pairs, one having a small cup for playing on the street and on parades and the other has a deep cup for concert, orchestra playing and solos and while the cups of these mouthpieces are entirely different, they have identically the same rim and face. With their use the performer can readily change from one to the other without inconvenience and without noticing a particle of difference. Although these mouthpieces were introduced only a short time ago, today they are used by a very large number of Cornetists throughout the country.”
It has a short shank, medium bore, and a deep, gently curving
cup. It is marked with “YORK & SONS” on one side and “AL-TRU / M” on the other side of the cup. M apparently stood for “Medium”. There is a tiny “C” on the shank, which I take to mean “Cornet”.
It is in
good, playable condition and has been re-plated to a like new finish. The only real defect is that there is a little nick out of the tip of the shank.
Mouthpiece

Cup Width: 0.635 in. (16.12mm)
Cup Depth: Approx. 0.6 in.

For
reference, this is about the size of a Wick 5 but with a thinner rim and smaller bore. Perhaps a Curry 8.5 DC would be a closer match (but again, a thinner rim).

About the Seller
I am not a professional musician, but have played the
trumpet/cornet since 4th Grade. So I know my way around a cornet and enjoy
studying their history and evolution, in addition to playing them. I hope part
of what I bring to the table is a knowledgeable and critical eye to evaluating
what I’m selling since you can’t look at it personally. Feel free to ask any
questions you may have about this sale or would like a closer look at anything
I can photograph.
